I'm quite pleasantly surprised by what a skilled director of silent films Anthony Asquith was. He made some pretty great sound films later in his career, but nothing that indicates just how visually daring and fluidly shot this film is. The story is pretty standard melodrama, with Landi in particular putting in a wonderfully odd performance, but the real draw here is the visual flair.

This symbolizes whats so great about silent movies! Such detailed visual storytelling. An art almost lost when sound came around. Anthony Asquith establishes a simple love dilemma involving 4 people and makes it into so much more. Every scene captures something special and one get caught up in it all. And to top it off there is a action filled finale to finish off on a high note giving us romance, betrayal and a life & death chase! The London underground can really be an exciting place!
