Film Festivals

Post by theficionado »

Do any of you make it a habit to attend film festivals?

Here in Columbia, Mo., we have the True/False Film Festival every year at the end of February. So, yeah, it's happening this weekend. It's a small, new documentary film festival, local-oriented but always bringing interesting fare and some big names (well, as big of names as the realm of documentary films has short of Herzog and Moore). Last year, we were lucky enough a number of interesting films little seen elsewhere and managed to get a preview of Man on Wire before it received distribution.

It's quickly become favorite weekend of the year.

The annual international film festival Kosmorama is being held in town beginning next week and considering I'm a film student who has gotten a week off school simply to attend it, and I have to write a paper on it afterwards, I'll obviously be attending. Also, the watchmen midnight premiere is a part of it, and I have a festival pass that gives me access to all the screenings. That's right, I don't even have to pay for my ticket to the watchmen premiere. Booyah!

i've never heard of anything in the twin cities minneapolis/st. paul, but even if there were that would be more than 100 miles away from me, i'd give my left nut to have one in rochester (where i live).

I do attend many local student film festivals in my spare time, as well as enter my own work in them, but when it comes to going to a more popular festival, most of them tend to be further away and more difficult to make it to. Although i still make a few more popular ones that are held in my own city.

I normally go to the BAFICI (Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente / Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema). They have a great amount of great films and it's pretty hard to pick just a few, I was left asking for more this year. Hey, it's in April, so it's coming back soon.
This year I was mostly thrilled to see Yoman (which I did not get to see, not that it matters because it's twelve different full length films and by just seeing one I wouldn't gain nothing). Actually, because of a busy schedule I only got to see the intriguing Fragments sur la grâce, Paranoid Park and, projected on the streets and being one of the most exciting moments of the festival, Luca. I also saw 'War' (not the Jet Li film), a pretentious gorefest that tried in vain to pass itself as provocative art (what was, in my opinion, the most offensive thing about it), so fucking boring that I fell asleep in the first row of the theatre, and this was a war films gentleman. I was so tired when I left the cinema that I fell asleep in the bus and woke up in La Boca, by day an antique neighbourhood where the first european inmigrants settled down exploited as a touristic attraction, and by night, hell on earth. Actually it's a good story. The fact I'm alive and well is pretty impressive, I believe.

I attended the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). I got the chance to see some films that will never come out where I live (and I mean never). Last year I saw "Maman est chez le coiffeur", and "Uncertainty" (both were very good), "Pescuit Sportiv" (very interesting take on relationships),...

stay away from "Acolytes", seriously...

One of the films I saw 2 years ago was "Izgnanie", and ooh my f%ck, was that one of the most boring films I've seen.

I saw Kevin Smith when he premiered "Zack & Miri", got to ask him a question, lol (and yes, I know many of you can't stand the guy, but I think his films are pretty sweet (not all of them oc)). But I learned my lesson, don't bother with American films, they're gonna come out anyway.

As you can see, not all films are worthy of your time. I do enjoy the atmosphere...

I hope the film is as good as the novel. I assume you read it since you seem so excited
