Admittedly, it is quite a few years since I saw Saraband, The Company or Gangs of New York. So my list includes two films each by Noé, Kiarostami and Scorsese, and four films by von Trier.

Of those 13 I would certainly have included Amour, Saraband, Irreversible and Winter Sleep.

In addition I'd have included things like The Hunt, Poetry and Our Sunhi to name just a few. And for documentaries I'd certainly include Salt of The Earth.

djross wrote:Conversely, films on the BBC list that in my view have absolutely no place on any "best of" list include the following: Shame, Carol, The Hurt Locker, The Great Beauty, Zero Dark Thirty, Goodbye to Language, 12 Years a Slave, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Son of Saul, Lost in Translation, Mad Max: Fury Road, Boyhood and In the Mood for Love.

I have no problem with Shame, Carol, The Great Beauty, 12 Years A Slave and In The Mood For Love being there.

I wouldn't have included things like Almost Famous, The Hurt Locker, Spotlight, Zero Dark Thirty or Son of Saul, and I wouldn't have A.I., Moulin Rouge, Spring Breakers or Boyhood within a hundred miles of a list like this. I've yet to see a Korine or Luhrmann film I thought didn't suck. If I were to include a Spielberg it would be Munich, and for Linklater it would be Waking Life. Oh, and if I were only including one David Lynch film it would be Inland Empire.

This list does include a lot more films that are overlooked and underappreciated than a lot of similar lists though, so overall I don't have much of a problem with it.

I see The Act of Killing at #14.

@brickwall, you mentioned in the other thread there were some odd choices. What were they?

I'm surprised that critics would recognize Moulin Rouge. That always seemed like a film geared towards Academy members (even though I haven't seen the whole thing...prejudice is fun.)

Not a single mention of Up, yet one of the critics had Madagascar 3 on their list. Regrettably, I couldn't find any full length review of the film by that critic; I would love to know how it got on his list.

BOYHOOD is the most inexplicable inclusion in the top 50 for me.
