"Decent Hallmark romance, but when the main impediment to everyone's happiness is one person just being dumb and difficult (especially when it's the main character), I get irked. Because the resolution is as easy as one person NOT being dumb and difficult. I want something a little more clever than that. That said, Kaley McCormack in a minor role leaps off the screen, I'd like to see more from her in the future."

"Actually quite a lot of fun (though the gobbledy-good at the end made no sense: the killer seems definitely unhinged throughout, not purposefully planning). Stole so many tropes from Psycho I lost count, but transformed the similar material into a very different seeming film. A surprise like for me."

15 1% | Solarbabies (1986) - Rated 04 Dec 2024
"Absolutely stupid. It starts with 10 minutes of watching a made-up sports event. Then Magic Rain falls on water-deprived people? Wouldn't they rush around trying to capture it in vessels? Nope, they splash around in it. Who wrote this dreck? And its stays stupid, inept, and just plain weird, for its entirety. I (honest) thought two of the leads were the same guy until about 40 minutes into this. One of the oddest in-focus films I've seen. And oh, the side ponies!"

35 12% | The Black Hole (1979) - Rated 30 Nov 2024
"Soulless and bloodless, an apparent attempt to ape Star Wars without any idea about why people so loved it. Often risible special effects, which is astonishing considering how often the effects looked great. There were double-exposures yielding transparent people, or transparent meteors, mediocre matting out of characters against whatever the equivalent of green screen was back then. Characters no one could care about, and a plot that made little sense, and (given the subject) very little Hole."

95 98% | Wicked (2024) - Rated 29 Nov 2024
"Loved the musical. Loved it. Saw it in previews on Broadway. And I loved this casting, but, still, slightly worried. I needn't have been, it was absolute perfection, just what I wanted. True to the show, and honoured the beloved MGM film, and even the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz book (lots of stylistic nods to 1900 and 1939!) And apparently it was 2 hours and 40 minutes, but it was the fastest 2 hours and 40 minutes of my life."

30 8% | Ten Canoes (2006) - Rated 27 Nov 2024
"I feel like a bad person for not enjoying this. I'm sure some people will think this is the bee's knees, but for me, it was dull, confusing, and lengthy, given the story. It reminded me a bit of when I went to Kabuki in Kyoto, and listened to the audio guide, except that experience was 500 times more riveting."

30 8% | Phantom of the Paradise (1974) - Rated 26 Nov 2024
"Thought it would be more my kind of things, but I didn't find it fun. Songs weren't fun, plot wasn't fun, art direction not particularly fun. It was sad, and bleak, really. Depressing. I liked the gay lead singer character, but he was short-lived."

30 8% | Dr. Caligari (1989) - Rated 23 Nov 2024
"It's certainly interesting to look at, but there's a lot of weird for the sake of being weird going on, and it doesn't have the zesty joy of a Forbidden Zone and its music to augment the proceedings. It's just odd. And I vastly preferred the early expressionist silent film that inspired this, of course. And as it continues, the artificiality gets wearing."
