Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) - Rated 15 Jul 2025
"Arguably more interesting than the film, but I think without being interested in the film, it's hard to be interested in this documentary. (Not a problem for the documentary about the Nic Cage superman, or the Fantastic Four movie, both of which I enjoyed enough to finish)."

The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) - Rated 14 Jul 2025
"Wow. I thought I'd love this: and the production design is gorgeous. I could turn off the sound and just look at it and enjoy it. But Oh My God the music is horrible. I love musicals: I run a musical theatre company in my town. I wrtie musicals. I (until Trump returned to power) went to NYC twice a year to see the new Broadway shows. I hate hate hate this music. Worse than LaLaLand, which I guess it inspired. A song about a serial killer also popped up for no reason. Ghastly music. Bad film."

Superman (2025) - Rated 13 Jul 2025
"Felt like it was made for me: super fun, the violence wasn't sadistic, the production looked beautifull, they leaned into the brightness and the goodness instead of trying to apologize for it. Perfectly cast, thank goodness: Superman, Lois, Jimmy, wonderful. So far my favourite film this year. Funny and moving."

Apocalypse Now: Final Cut (2019) - Rated 10 Jul 2025
"Not for me. I'm not keen on violence, war, guns, etc., even when (I guess) the point of the movie is violence, war, guns, etc. aren't so good? I already know that. I appreciate the film is well-lit and photographed nicely, but I'm either bored or stressed throughout. My idea of a good war movie is Gone With the Wind ... In many ways this seems more like a horror movie to me (and I mostly don't like these either, I'm hard to please). But I'm more the Elvira Mistres of the Dark type than this."

The Rocking Horse Winner (1949) - Rated 10 Jul 2025
"Beautiful production design, gripping surprising story, quite moving. Ultimately a horror story, IMO. I had no idea it was going to be so dark, I was expecting something whimsical. Boy, was I wrong."

Lost Continent (1951) - Rated 07 Jul 2025
"Makes Manos the Hands of Fate seem like a masterpiece of screenwriting. This is sort of a masterclass in how not to write, direct, or edit. Hard to believe a claymation dinosaur movie could be so dull. Cesar Romero is handsome and charismatic and it would be nice to see him in better things."

UHF (1989) - Rated 05 Jul 2025
"Watchable, occasionally actually funny, but a lot of the time it just kind of laid there. Funny how sometimes this sort of thing will fire on all cylinders for me (e.g. Elivra Mistress of the Dark) but other times it just isn't quite there. The best thing in this film is Michael Richards, and Weird Al is almost a non-presence in his own star vehicle."

Beast Games (2024) - Rated 02 Jul 2025
"Loud offensive and unenvironmental. I'm thinking about the sheer waste involved, ick. The host is charmless, I'm stunned he's popular online, and his friends are worse. Top it off with a cruel game where who wins is largely based on chance or other people's decisions, and it's a no go for me after episode 3. I'm not going to like it any better as it goes along. Oh, and anyone who would rather have a 1 in 300 chance at $5 million, rather than a guaranteed $1 million, is an idiot."

Wild Rebels (1967) - Rated 29 Jun 2025
"Not my thing, even if it were more competent. Don't like cars, don't like motorcycles, don't like gangs, don't like violence, don't like robberies (unless they're a cleverly-plotted heist), so this did absolutely nothing for me."

Stage Fright (1950) - Rated 28 Jun 2025
"A bit of a slow burn, better as it goes along. it's really not so much about the suspense as it is about the actors. So many wonderful character actors, what a delight! And then every so often some marvellous set piece, some terrific lighting ... it's better than I expected. There was some clever misdirection that puzzled me until the end, when i was able to rewatch the beginning with fresh eyes. Smart writing!"
