Columbus Day (2008) - Rated 07 Jun 2009
Very slow paced, it's set almost entirely in a park and is mostly dialogue. Kilmer is onscreen in every minute of the film. By no means is this about a heist, it's centered around people and is effective in building the relationships between Kilmer, Helgenberger and the boy, Thompson. While the character development is strong and involved, the overall package feels lacking.

Gran Torino (2008) - Rated 07 Jun 2009
A racist war vet saves his young neighbours from a violent gang. Eastwood is brilliant as a hardened old-school war vet. Growls and all, he presents a performance that is entertaining from start to finish. The supporting acts are far from great but it doesn't take away from the film. Through dark humour this movie confronts stereotypes head on and does a decent job of it. Flaws and all, it's hard to believe that by the end, everything comes together so nicely and just works. Its unexplainable.

North by Northwest (1959) - Rated 06 Jun 2009
Not as intense or thrilling as some of Hitchcock's other pieces, but an entertaining adventure story. Cary Grant is really enjoyable in this film and the dialogue is lighthearted and witty. With secret agents, a pretty woman and a smart foe, this is almost a Bond film.

Australia (2008) - Rated 06 Jun 2009
Luhrmann's unique love-it-or-hate-it style. This is an important film for the Australian industry, and it certainly has great Australian scenery but I wasn't sold on the acting or story. There's a little bit of magic in this film, but it feels too much like Pearl Harbor.

Presto (2008) - Rated 24 May 2009
This is how shorts should be done. Quick, witty and hilarious. With a touch of the Pixar magic, this is easily one of their best.

BURN-E (2008) - Rated 24 May 2009
A charming short with Pixar's usual technical finesse and a few laughs for good measure.

WALL·E (2008) - Rated 24 May 2009
Imaginative, original and creative. For a film with much less dialogue than we are used to, Wall·E does a great job at building the two main characters. Excellent animation and set design, as we have come to expect from Pixar, and great sound to back it up. While the first half is stronger than the second, the whole feature is excellent. This is their best work to date.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006) - Rated 23 May 2009
A haunting fairytale that entwines a brutal reality with an imaginative fantasy. Dark, graphic and emotive, Del Toro has done brilliantly on the writing and direction. Even as a fairy tale this is very much a film for an adult audience.

Double Indemnity (1944) - Rated 23 May 2009
A cleverly written classic. Witty dialogue, great direction and perfect rhythm. Barbara Stanwyck is a classic as the alluring and diabolical Phyllis. Entertaining from start to finish.

The Bone Collector (1999) - Rated 23 May 2009
Decent movie but not enough suspense or tension to make it a great thriller. Interesting crime scenes are the highlight, would have liked to see a twist or something deeper to keep us engaged.
