"A mixed bag. The first 3rd, the part before the sewer, is uneven. There's a few good scenes and a lot of slow, wooden ones that don't work well to establish sympathy for the characters. The descent into the sewer marks a sharp shift in tone and a touch of the surrealism I expect from eastern Europe appears. It's a lot more good than bad but I expected Ashes and Diamonds and it just didn't live up to that with the subpar opening and lack of a charismatic lead character like Zbigniew Cybulski was."
