The Wild Robot (2024) - Rated 18 Jan 2025
"It's beautiful, and the casting is wonderful, but it felt like the whole story, plot, and dialogue was built on a pile of fortune cookies. Will the kids care? No. I will happily have it on repeat for them."
The Batman (2022) - Rated 29 Aug 2024
"I like the idea of a young, mentally unstable Bruce Wayne - thinking he’s really acing the detective role - only to find out he’s absolutely not. The carpet being ripped out from under him (hah!) the sheer terror of missing that last step in the darkness could be extremely dark, and extremely rewarding for an audience. Instead, I have to hear the same song three too many times, and pretend to take a moody twenty-something seriously. John T., Zoe, Andy, and Colin almost save it."
Alien: Romulus (2024) - Rated 23 Aug 2024
"It’s a good movie for what it is - with just enough under the hood to keep your Freu -er-friends - going on for days about the “inherent symbolism” of... whatever. If you get pulled in that deep, just bring up the choices they decided to make with Andy, stigmas, stereotypes, disabilities and their portrayal in Hollywood, and watch the sparks fly! Kablooey kablooey!"
Thelma (2024) - Rated 23 Jun 2024
The Garfield Movie (2024) - Rated 28 May 2024
"A few moments of truly inspired cleverness save the film from being completely bland and boring. There are worse movies to put on for the kids if you need 90-minute mental vacation."
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) - Rated 05 May 2024
"25 years later, I still stand with my kid-self: it’s a good movie. The poignant moments are heartfelt and genuine, the action intense and original, and the story works. Was it hard to balance the Senate, the Republic, and the Trade Federation as a kid? Yes. Did the droids deliver lines with more affect than the humans? Yes, but as a kid (and as an adult) I didn’t/don’t care. As a kid, I loved Jar-Jar. As an adult, I see that he’s supposed to be a banished f-up, OG-troll. And I love it."
Wish (2023) - Rated 12 Apr 2024
"I wish for something more than this - a culmination of everything bad that’s been brewing at Disney for more than a decade. - the main character is selfish, self-absorbed, and shallow; demonstrably and irredeemably so, from the first five minutes of the movie - the central plot revolves around weaponizing hope - every character is soulless - the songs are exposition, but there’s nothing too big happening, so the songs are meaningless - every bit of (important) dialog is faff"
Beastars (2019) - Rated 12 Mar 2024
"Entertaining enough. Pacing seemed good, writing wasn’t terrible, mildly intriguing world. Characters seem charming, but very quickly devolve into stereotypes. The ‘really deep questions’ posed by the series don’t really hold weight - failing to support and most of plot and story points a good amount of the time. I don’t think I would’ve watched the second season if Netflix hadn’t queued it up after the last episode of the first season."
Great Pretender (2020) - Rated 24 Jan 2024
Megamind (2010) - Rated 25 Sep 2023
"If I watch another animated character dance around like a drunken marionette to one more pop song, I will die."
