Blue Velvet (1986) - Rated 19 Aug 2012
I didn't expect to see this from David Lynch: Blue Velvet is surrealistic and and weird, but it's also coherent and watchable. Also, Dennis Hopper is awesome in this.

The Ghost Writer (2010) - Rated 19 Aug 2012
The tight script and effective direction alone would be enough to carry this political thriller. Together with the good performances, the beautiful cinematography and the spot-on political message, The Ghost Writer is a sheer pleasure to watch.

The Ides of March (2011) - Rated 14 Aug 2012
A well-acted and well-directed political drama. The plot about idealism versus Machiavellianism is not exactly ground-braking, but interesting and involving.

Prometheus (2012) - Rated 14 Aug 2012
The script writers found a way to overload the simple story of Alien with tons of religious mumbo jumbo - without delivering on any of the ideas they introduce. Fortunately, the core story still works very well: The parts that are supposed to be scary and intense are exactly that.

Waking Life (2001) - Rated 14 Aug 2012
Waking Life The biggest weakness of Waking Life is is that it is less clever than it thinks it is. The film is essentially a long string of speeches supposed to expose you to interesting ideas. Unfortunately most of the ideas are either not that interesting or not that well put.

Pulse (2001) - Rated 06 Aug 2012
Sure, the premise is silly and so is a lot of the dialogue. But nevertheless, the first half of Pulse works very well on a atmospheric level. The way colors and shadow are used are genuinely scary. But then the script just keeps piling on pseudo-philosophical BS and unclear character motivations until the movie collapses in on itself.

Drive Angry (2011) - Rated 25 Jul 2012
The good: Drive Angry is a movie about people driving cars and shooting guns featuring Nicolas Cage. The bad: The guns and cars defy physics, the people act like weirdos from another planet. And Nicolas Cage doesn't freak out nearly often enough.

Thor (2011) - Rated 25 Jul 2012
Thor isn't bad, it's just unnecessary. The movie plays it safe: Instead of bringing anything new to the table, it tells a story we know in a familiar way on an unimpressive scale.

50/50 (2011) - Rated 28 May 2012
Thanks to its actors and script, this movie handles radical tonal shifts with surprising grace. We discover new aspects about the characters and are left with a warm fuzzy feeling in the end.

The Avengers (2012) - Rated 28 May 2012
Even with more than two and a half hours, Avengers has little time developing the huge ensemble cast. Praise be to Joss Whedon for making the film work anyway. Simple and fun without being stupid, Avengers accomplished what it sets out to.
