Deadpool (2016) - Rated 25 Aug 2025
"I'm torn: on one hand, I really appreciate a (hard) R-rated take on a superhero and it certainly works with Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds is (for once) fantastic in a role and I love the bridge fight and anytime he's with Colossus. That said, the same problem I have with 'Pool in the comics is magnified here when the film self-consciously tries to show the human side of a 4th-wall-breaking, super-violent, insane mercenary. Every scene like that here is cringe or boring. A fun, if very uneven, risk."
Stardust (2007) - Rated 17 Aug 2025
"I didn't think it was terrible - Danes and Pfeiffer were pretty great in their roles and there was some genuinely creative ideas (the ghost brothers, controlling the dead body with a puppet) - but this just wasn't for me. Fantasy by itself is just such a hard sell for my tastes. I need something like Game of Thrones' complex political intrigue to help wash down all of the elves and goblins and magic. Otherwise it all just seems a bit too silly for me, as Stardust does."
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) - Rated 14 Aug 2025
"Like every watcher above 12, I watched this with my kid and found it surprisingly engaging. The plot is barely there just to get the animals moving but it's pretty amazing what the film got these animal actors to do! Swimming, climbing and unlocking doors, cat licking a dogs face, all laying down next to each other - that's incredible! Adults will realize all of the movie trickery keeping the pets safe in every scene but you'll hear your kids gasp several times."
House of the Dragon (2022) - Rated 13 Aug 2025
"It isn't a huge mess (like Rings of Power) which is a win but House of the Dragon is way smaller in scope than what I grew accustomed to with Game of Thrones. The characters are complex and interesting and it looks fantastic, but the plot isn't always as engaging to justify all 10 episodes."
Catwoman: Hunted (2022) - Rated 10 Aug 2025
"The introduction had me expecting a highly-stylized Catwoman movie. Instead, I just got a run-of-the-mill animated ho-hum-fest. The animation is below average but at least Solomon Grundy and Cheetah, especially, were menacing."
Labyrinth (1986) - Rated 10 Aug 2025
"Bravely weird but also never seems to lift off and be fun, either."
Freaky Friday (2003) - Rated 07 Aug 2025
"I'm clearly not the demographic for this type of movie but, even still, this seems like a pretty poorly written switcheroo movie, no?"
Happy Gilmore 2 (2025) - Rated 02 Aug 2025
"I couldn't even get through this on a slow night of a vacation, it's that bad. I believe Sandler just gets people he knows and asks them to figure out what happens in their cameo scene."
Elio (2025) - Rated 24 Jul 2025
"A sub-par Disney/Pixar effort that feels surprisingly small for a movie about intergalactic travel. Starts as a tale of feeling lost losing your family but ends with a lesson about acceptance and tolerance? A boring tale with kinda low stakes housed in confused messaging."
Lucy (2014) - Rated 24 Jul 2025
"Lucy is clearly a lower-level kinda-action sci-fi lite thriller and that leads to a bit of a muddled mess. But, it also isn't trying to be anything more so I have to grade on a curve. Johanson is pretty good but the ideas never even come close to being explored (or explained) to their potential."
