Don't Look Up (2021) - Rated 29 Jul 2025
"the comedic elements here were really, really good. the satire part is just really ham-fisted and that pulls it short of being thoroughly enjoyable, there would be a good movie here that would be more subtle and authentic to people's reactions."
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) - Rated 21 Jul 2025
"Not as good even as the first - more style over substance and name-droppy, and conclusion was a little too convenient and not that satisfying."
Anora (2024) - Rated 21 May 2025
"a fantastically-acted film that covers all bases of emotions and story - Mikey Madison really shines in particular. Middle act is just hilariously slapstick funny."
Dune (2021) - Rated 07 Jan 2025
"I'll have to see if Part 2 picks up but this was super slow, plodding, while failing to build up much of an interesting universe. The family background/prophecy stuff a little too on-the-nose and not enough buildup on "characters that matter". Could see it being a better miniseries than a movie for sure."
The Gentlemen (2020) - Rated 07 Jan 2025
"all-star cast but starts really slow and muddy. don't know if I loved the payoff as well as other Guy Ritchie films, but lots of style to all the characters"
Burnt (2015) - Rated 07 Jan 2025
"decent performances but insufferable main character and very cliche. there really is not much depth to the food focus"
Garden State (2004) - Rated 16 Nov 2024
"honestly, really unmemorable. plot really meandered, I didn't like the characterization of Portman's character"
Saltburn (2023) - Rated 29 Oct 2024
"okay, this was weird and compelling! the scene-setting and acting is really well done. I am not sure I came away with a compelling character arc or story out of it (unlike say, an obsessive character study like Whiplash)"
The Darjeeling Limited (2007) - Rated 29 Oct 2024
"I love Wes Anderson's stuff but this was too plodding and loose on the narrative - too much of just showing eccentricity without an apparent enough focus on where the characters/plot are going."
Bottoms (2023) - Rated 15 Oct 2024
"solid, ridiculously funny movie! the leads have great chemistry, the premise is a little over the top but once you buy into that the humor itself is pretty grounded."
