This highly popular and deeply racist film strongly contributed to the "othering" of Egyptians, and by extension, the Middle East. This is Orientalism at it's most blatant and damaging.

13th (2016) - Rated 23 Oct 2016

This documentary's powerful and worthwhile message is too often hindered by distracting editing and an unfocused narrative. However, it will still be worth seeing for those who are interested.

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years (2016) - Rated 02 Oct 2016

The archival footage was mildly interesting, but how much screaming fangirls can one take? The film is probably only worthwhile if you have a particular interest in the Beatles.

The 400 Blows (1959) - Rated 10 Sep 2016

The story might be a bit directionless and implausible, but the film is redeemed by Truffaut's good eye for the camera and a good performance by the lead child actor.

The Great Escape (1963) - Rated 10 Sep 2016

Ham-handed comedy (at times bordering on slapstick) permeates this misguided, overlong World War II story. The stereotypes are as broad and dumb as possible: the Nazis are idiotic, cartoonish buffoons and the Americans are tough, manly, and daring. The film is a jingoistic propaganda piece that has little artistic value.

Suicide Squad (2016) - Rated 12 Aug 2016

A disheveled collection of ersatz nonsense, directed like a music video. Some decent performances by Will Smith and Margot Robbie are mostly wasted here, and I cared little about these characters or what happened to them.

The Secret Life of Pets (2016) - Rated 30 Jul 2016

An insipid and lazy waste of talent that aspires to little more than entertaining children with poop jokes.

Star Trek Beyond (2016) - Rated 28 Jul 2016

While perhaps lacking the thoughtful writing of classic Star Trek, this installment is an adequate action thriller with good visuals and decent performances.
