The Deer Hunter (1978) - Rated 18 Jul 2025
"Loved a lot about it: the big early scenes, the performances. But it leaned weirdly heavily into one Russian roulette gimick. Did that need to be what Nick does as a job? The film nailed the everyday U.S. life vs war contrast so well, then threw it away by making the post-escape war stuff so over the top and unbelievable. If it had just been that Christopher Walken’s character lost his mind a bit and killed himself, fine. The whole Russian roulette ring felt wrong."
Goodfellas (1990) - Rated 06 Jul 2025
"I found it a bit dull, weirdly edited, and just didn’t enjoy it that much. I’d score it lower if I wasn’t trying to account for it perhaps being groundbreaking for it’s time."
The Neon Demon (2016) - Rated 04 Jul 2025
"It was stylish and nicely scored and all, but I didn’t find it well-acted or interestingly written. I was bored most of the time. Maybe I missed its points, but it didn’t seem like it was as clever or insightful as it thought it was, and relied on cheap shocks to keep you even vaguely interested."
Dogtooth (2009) - Rated 09 May 2025
"It may look interesting on the surface, and it has some fun ideas that are well acted out, but I felt the weirdness was there just to give it credibility amongst the art-house crowd, and the sexual scenes felt like they were thrown in because Lanthimos (who I am certain is a pervert) wanted to see them enacted in front of him. It’s weird and shocking sure, but that doesn’t make it as clever an allegory for parenting or totalitarianism as some seem to think."
American Honey (2016) - Rated 31 Mar 2025
"I can’t put into words how this film makes me feel, for me it captures the world before the pandemic, a time it narrowly missed. There’s a reckless, hedonistic energy that reminds me of the freedom of festivals, the best nights of my life, drunk, high, lost in the moment. Ii also does something rare with its soundtrack. It leans into pop songs that might not be good, but they feel authentic, tracks you can easily imagine these characters actually choosing, playing loud, and living through."
The House of the Devil (2009) - Rated 22 Mar 2025
"No idea why this was a PSI of 7. Extremely basic trope-heavy horror with poor acting. There was nothing interesting or innovative here."
Alien (1979) - Rated 18 Mar 2025
Event Horizon (1997) - Rated 10 Mar 2025
"Potentially interesting concept spoiled by cliche production. The scares felt artificially inserted, I’m not a fan of the overused fake-out vision/dream fright and this trope was practically the entire film. Also not a fan of the origin of the horror not being explained, to me you either explain it or you make the abstract depiction interesting and beautiful enough that I don’t care (eg 2001), this did neither."
