Ah man, I don't even know where to start with this. I guess I need to start with how much of a spineless coward the main character is and how infuriating all of the characters are in this. The acting in this is phenomenal and the writing is great, but all of the choices in how the characters behave in this angers me to no end! I realize if any of these characters were smart that this movie would not exist, but I reserve the right to say that since magic is apparently real...
I have consumed a lot of content with Manic Pixie Dream girls, yanderes, and other crazy archetypes. I feel like so many other movies and shows do this sort of thing in a way more believable way. At times, this just seemed like it was going through the motions on what the worst thing could happen when someone gets a little too crazy for someone. But it's portrayed inconsistently, and not in a way that has hard rules. Some times she will act like a dog, and others, she will act normal, and then just just goes psycho. That's just not narratively interesting and and the archetypes the lead actress portrays goes all over the place when a lot of the times (at least narratively), they should pick lane and stay in it and change later on. Instead, she constantly flips back and forth. Perhaps this movie is trying to have a take on Schizophrenia, but even then, adding the element of magic just makes this movie disrespectful to mental illnesses.
That leads me to the last thing... Is this really a horror movie or is an extremely dark romantic comedy? You see, that's where I struggle with with... I am not sure what to feel or think about this. Am I supposed to laugh or cry? All I know is that the main character is an idiot and I felt this entire movie was almost a complete waste of time. I saw almost because it has some of the best performances I have seen in a while. Inde Navarrette has such an amazing range. She had a very complicated job and did it flawlessly. I just didn't really understand fully what the movie was going for. Also, that ending was perfect. I am hoping to watch this again, watch some analysis videos.
Anyways, I am hoping my stream of consciousness made sense. I honestly am still a little bit confused by this movie. What did all of you make of it?
Also, what would you wish for?
