The Rip
There's some version of this movie I probably love with my whole heart but it falls a bit too much into some S Craig Zahler and Michael Bay trappings placed into a reheated, stale, pandering nachos version of its best self. "Cops are sometimes corrupt, but not all of them" is a message better suited for some superior auteur stylistically riffing to make up for his law enforcement propaganda or something so aesthetically vulgar the message and the medium are interchangeable. The second a certain supporting part showed up, I had a strong feeling of where the winds were going to blow (nothing wrong with predictability) and so there was a certain joy in seeing it all come together (whodunit style) the way I knew it would. AND THEN THERE WAS STILL HALF AN HOUR LEFT! I like gonzo action as much as the next guy, but it lasts maybe five or ten of those minutes and then there's just a LOT of wheel spinning our way to the end credits. Gotta be doing something wrong if you're boring ME of all people.
Here's hoping Netflix's next collaboration with Affleck is MUCH better.
