Sinners

It really is a spoiler to classify this as a high-end riff on FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, but Coogler has a similar problem in making two very interesting (and entertaining) films but struggling with the connective tissue that would tie everything together and bring more resonance to what appears to be a potent (and angry) race relations allegory. The film’s loftier ambitions makes it more difficult to overlook its failings, but it’s so brilliantly performed (shout outs to Jordan, Steinfeld and as always Lindo), and Coogler’s directorial eye is so striking, especially the scenery that pops in 65MM. that I’ll extend this some latitude, and hope that a hotly anticipated second viewing will help things coalesce.
