It's "From Dusk Till Dawn" but with a social subtext very similar to Get Out. White people colonize black people in different ways: they kill them (The Klan), they impose their God on them (the preacher) or they force them to join their hive-mind where you get equality in exchange of your identity (the vampires), alike Get Out. The only space of freedom left is the one among the sinners, in music, where everybody can find freedom in their identity. Blues makes black men free.

Jordan is good in playing two characters, and the first half is captivating, but the second part can't really jell together a very genre-typical climax with the director ambitions. Watching this after the news of the 16 Oscar nominations it really seems like the result of a big producer Oscar push: this is a big budget horror movie (a rarity) from a director that earned credits in the industry with Creed and Black Panther, and now it's trying to assert himself as an author, playing with big themes and even the frame ratio, while also keeping an eye to the big audience. Mission half accomplished.
