Its slick glossiness makes this feel more like an abstract idea than successful drama (I’m not sure we really feel the true agony of the characters’ plight when everyone seems to still have perfect hair on Day 3!), and this somewhat betrays the more acrid and visceral King novel, which had a lot more fiery post-Vietnam anger fuelling the drama, which this can’t match as it morphs into an unfocused and unclear parable about modern political corruption and ugliness (especially the bizarrely incongruous re-written finale). The base concept is still an interesting one (and should have been a more effective basis for a film adaptation), and the cast of walkers are an enjoyable group, even if they aren’t given much of a chance to develop their personalities; Hamill’s raving D.I. is arguably the film’s greatest asset.
