An impressive roll-call of front and back of house talent sets high expectations, until it becomes apparent that Scorsese must have made a few “Hail Mary” calls to friends to salvage what appears to have been an alarmingly troubled production – seeds of an enjoyable serial killer style thriller are here, and a fine cast would seem ideally suited to their roles, but all are directed in such a way that they appear confused as to who they are and what they are doing, not helped by a rough editing job that makes many scenes incomprehensible and stuttered in their flow, especially the opening section. If you’re not fussy about your serial killer movie, it’s fine as a benign distraction, but there’s not a great deal memorable here.
