Grumpy Old Men
Why does Burgess Meredith, the funniest of the grumpy old men, not simply cuck the other two? (His improv outtakes during the end credits contain more laughs than the actual movie.)
The issue is not that Lemmon or Matthau themselves couldn't get Ann-Margret, but why her character here becomes so fixated on theirs. She's a rich life-loving knockout and they are, well, you know. What few bits of wit they show are reserved exclusively for each other. Is she the first Manic Pixie Dream Senior? (I am undecided on The Maude Question.) Incidentally, there is a Medium post on the topic by an "autistic writer with D.I.D.", whose other posts include an indictment of "fake-claiming" someone's "D.I.D. system". I would never! Claiming that one particular person's D.I.D. system is fake presupposes that another person's D.I.D. system could be real.
Said autistic writer also posits that Ann-Margret's character is autistic (quelle surprise), because she "seeks out stimming behavior" like eating spicy food and riding a snowmobile down the street. I suppose that could also explain why she becomes so fixated on two older men of whose league she is healthily out. I cannot speak to this personally. Most of the women I've punched above my weight with have been drunks or Borderline or in the mildest case, a borderline drunk.
I'm certainly interested in speaking to it personally, though. Why else do you think I began this review with a mangled Futurama reference? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-06ki92PyVY
