Hypnotic
Hypnotic succeeds because of its premise. The idea of hypnotists capable of altering perception, manipulating reality, and weaponizing the human mind feels like a throwback to the ambitious sci-fi thrillers that were more common in the 1990s and early 2000s. It's the kind of concept that immediately grabs your attention and keeps you guessing.
Director Robert Rodriguez clearly enjoys playing with audience expectations. The story is packed with twists, shifting realities, and surprising reveals that constantly force viewers to reassess what they think is happening. Not every twist lands perfectly, but the movie rarely becomes predictable. Ben Affleck delivers a solid performance, bringing enough gravitas and emotional investment to anchor the increasingly bizarre story. Alice Braga also provides strong support and helps sell some of the film's more complicated ideas.
The biggest weakness is that the plot occasionally becomes so focused on twists that it risks losing emotional momentum. Some developments feel more clever than satisfying. Even so, Hypnotic remains an entertaining and refreshingly original sci-fi thriller.
