We're talking hymen holocaust here
Post-Scream slasher revival films are some of my least favourite horror movies. With often boring a bloodless kills, unremarkable characters and too self aware for their own good. So I must admit my hopes for this were not very high.
But I must say that I had a great time with this. The concept is a fun way to turn a classic slasher trope around. Slashers are infamous for people getting killed during sex, to the point that the promiscuous dying while we get a virgin final girl, is almost a given. This time around though, the killer is killing virgins. Which leads to some pretty fun scenes, like a two parents fighting after one slut shamed the other man's daughter. Or the main character's sheriff dad barging in her room while she is sleeping to ask if she's a virgin, and being disappointed when she admits that she is.
Brittany Murphy is great in the main role, I wish we could have seen her in more horror films. She truly sells this role so well, and makes the character a very likeable and rootable one to follow. One of my favourite final girls in a while. The scene where she finds out about her father is especially very good, if only her career wasn't cut short.
I think it does the mix of comedy and horror quite well, a sizable amount of the jokes land (which I consider an achievement coming form a movie where most of the jokes are about sex) but the scenes with the killer are sizably tense and the kills get quite gnarly for a film lacking in on screen gore.
The one weird thing that does happen in the movie is that Brittany Murphy's character for some reason has sexual tension with pretty much every character, doesn't matter if it's her ex-boyfriend, her best friend, her English teacher, her dad or the damn killer. I think it's mostly with how the scenes are framed so it's SUCH an odd choice to make, and one that can be quite jarring, especially with one on one scenes with Murphy and the adult characters. (AND THEN WE GET A TOE SUCKING SCENE? Too many foot fetishists in this industry)
I seem to somewhat be in the minority of people who genuinely like this film, but I confidently call this my favourite from the post-scream slasher boom.
Fall of Trash: 6. 9/27 - Watch a movie featuring an actor who passed away aged 39 or younger.
