it's quite amazing -- and not really surprising -- how this's aged well in so many aspects, main one being revolutionary ideas as just another part -- or product -- of pop culture in the age of wars, social unrest and youth in rebellion. some bold anticlimactic choices here and there -- like the use of long static shots in dialogues --, but what strikes me the most is when jlg seems to step back from his usual iconoclastic provocative mood to stage a bunch of slight bits that end up looking just as witchy -- wife killing husband, man stabbing himself after threatening paul and of course the way paul always flicks a cig into his mouth before smoking it. one of his most insanely quotable films -- and not just because of the intertitles.
