Apocalypse Now: Final Cut
This review contains spoilers
there's a certain scene from apocalypse now that i just couldn't get out of my mind, during and after watching it. it's that scene right after martin sheen's character gets off the boat at the do lung bridge and receives a letter. he's in the trenches asking everyone "do you know who's in command here?" and a soldier just looks right at him and simply says "yeah".
in my opinion, this scene is absolutely perfect and embodies everything i love about this film completely. the eerie, hazy, maddening, almost dreamlike atmosphere that lingers over the whole thing, the colourful yet contained cinematography, the still-yet-sliding camerawork, and the philosophical and poetic elements of apocalypse now are all prevalent and done to perfection in this brief but iconic and perfect scene.
i got chills and the hair on my arms stood up when i first saw it, combined with the previous knowledge and experience of everything that came just before making the way they talk, the way the camera moves and the way the lighting beams around like a lighthouse almost uncanny, it all works just slightly too fast and slightly too slow at the same time and i couldn't get enough of it. i keep replaying this scene in my mind but it doesn't get any worse, if anything it only gets even better as i'm thinking about it right now as of writing. a truly outstanding film, watched the final cut on blu-ray 4k ultra-hd disc.
