With a lot of video game movies on this channel, I say that I'm not overly familiar with the game. Well this time, I started the remastered version of the original a few days before. So I'm an expert now.

Some people are apparently upset that it's not a direct adaptation. But really, if you want the game's story, then just play the games. This is a new story of this universe that expands on the cannon in interesting ways.

It's a fast paced story with no filler at a lean 90 minutes. It's just the character's one night where he makes his journey, but everything is out to get him.

It's Cregger's most conventional narrative to date, but what it lacks in defying traditional story, it makes up with its narrative drive and thrills. And it also keeps that unpredictability to a far lesser extent.

It also keeps his sense of humor surprisingly. There are points where it feels out of place, mostly in the first half or so. Like scenes where the joke is just that the hero reacts to the horror in front of him in a funny way. But other times, it works very well. Like points where you're reminded that he's just a regular guy who's never had to use a gun before.

And he's a pretty likable lead. Although he does make some pretty dumb horror movie decisions. Which is weird because other times, he seems to be really smart and strategic. Like this one time, a dog chases him into a barn, and he climbs a ladder to the second floor where the dog can't get to. He then decides to escape through the back window. And he traps the dog in by using the ladder to push the barn door closed. Pretty smart move. But then he throws the ladder at the dog for no reason, leaving him with no way to climb down from that window.

But in a way this does feel like an accurate portrayal of a survival horror game. It's a man trying to survive off of guns and other resources he finds on the way, while encountering things that want to kill him. I can't say for sure that it's in the spirit of Resident Evil, since all I really know about it as of now is that the camera sucks. Not even the remaster could fix that. But it probably is. And most importantly, it's a thrilling movie on its own. Oh you just wanted to see a less immersive version of the same old story with some half-assed fan-service crudely shoved in there? Well, you're getting a good movie instead. This must be a difficult time for you
