The film has an interesting idea, but it’s never fully developed throughout the story. That wouldn’t be a problem on its own, if not for the logical gaps that push the film into forced and artificial drama. By “forced drama” I mean the entire concept of the alternate universe itself. Donnie is pulled out of his room so the second universe can exist, then pushed through suffering and acceptance, only to be led to a conscious choice of death instead of a random one. But that choice doesn’t seem to change anything. If he had simply died in his sleep the first time, the alternate universe wouldn’t exist either, and everything would still resolve the same way.
I’m also confused by the contradictions between the film’s tone and its explanations. On one hand it aims to be mature, dark and even brutal at times. On the other hand, the book explanations and the mechanics of the alternate universe feel naive and almost childish, more mystical fantasy than a serious, well-thought-out concept.

Visually the film is strong and the core idea is compelling, but the flaws outweigh the strengths. Still, it’s not a bad movie overall.
