The eminent art historian Sir Kenneth Clark was commissioned to write and present an epic examination of Western European culture, defining what he considered to be the crucial phases of its development. Civilisation: A Personal View by Lord Clark would be more than two years in the making, with filming in over 100 locations across 13 countries. The lavish series was hailed as a masterpiece when it was first transmitted in 1969. (amazon.com)

After the catastrophic and tragic moment that occurred two weeks ago, both philosophically for the world and personally for me, I felt completely unable to pay attention to movies. This series was perhaps the only thing I could have watched during this period, a sweeping look back at the Western noetic necromass conducted by a guide whose appreciation, enthusiasm and thoughtful judgment was constantly apparent, in a genuine way that fifty years later seems to have become nearly unimaginable.

An in depth, insightful yet subjective series from the endearing humanist, Clark. it was refreshing to see what we would now consider professional errors, a host learning what to do with his hands on the fly, several words stumbled over with seemingly no concept of a retake, but this was 1969 and the content grants the production a pass. Regardless, this is peripheral to the thoughtfully curated walk through the history of art, architecture, science and philosophy from the Franks to 1969.
