[s1] an excellent cast of quirky characters with an autistic lead. the slice of lifey cooking is fun entertainment while the larger background plot unfolds, although it's yet to really pay off yet

The worldbuilding is fascinating, the characters are both super deep and super silly, the plot is full of interesting twists, the individual episodes have all these amazing high-concept premises, and there's a thread of ethical philosophy in it, focused on food and cooking, that's truly heartening. Also it's really gay and autistic.

A few narrative beats come off as awkward (particularly the stuff with Shura) but Meshi manages to be both consistently fun and emotionally resonating when it tries to be. Really love that every character has unique quirks that add something to every setpiece and the inherent chemistry between everyone is both endearing and engaging, especially when everyone's backstory opens up without becoming overboding. Trigger's style of animation can be a bit weird at times but I still think it's neat.

Lovely characters with great chemistry combined with a cute idea for fantasy food-based adventuring in an interesting world leads to some pretty fun times. Trigger knows just when to add their style of intensely animated action to the proceedings. However, I will say that this is at its best when being cute and funny, and the turn towards more serious plotting later on is hard not to feel a little disappointed about.
