[Seasons 1-2] What a great series. The serial plots are ho-hum, but the characters are all incredible and most are very, very funny. I love the setting, and the political turmoil is done in the exact right way for a sitcom. Although the focus is on the titular girls, the standouts for me are all the adults--with special shout outs to Sister Michael and Granda Joe.

Derry Girls reinvents the teen comedy, juxtaposing the ordinary problems of Catholic school girls (boys, exams, parents) with the brutal realities of Northern Ireland's turbulent history. The writing, the cast and thesense of place are perfect and the result is funny, irreverent and even unexpectedly moving.

Season 1 - Having been a teenager in Ireland in the 90's, a lot of the references hit home. Does a good job of balancing the story of four girls in school with the bigger picture of Northern Ireland at the time, but never gets serious or really political. This is just the backdrop to their lives.

Genuinely such an amazing show - made me laugh, even made me cry, taught me a lot of new slang and left me with a strange desire to move to Northern Ireland. The cast is stellar and I am in love with Nicola Coughlan.
