Watched immediately after watching the feature version. This one doesn't have as developed characters and the romance doesn't have as much of a build up. People were uglier though so it has that realism. Fav scene: talking about how Marty's dad and mom were.

What I prefer about this version was the tight running time. There's a lot less fat, especially regarding the secondary characters. However, what's missing is the development of the connection between Marty and Clara. Here we don't really get a feel that these two care for each other at all except as a barrier against future loneliness. And I prefer Borgnine's performance over Steiger's. Steiger may be a bit more realistic and introverted, but Borgnine is far more enjoyable and interesting.

Not seen Marty (1955) yet, but this TV episode of Marty taken from the The Philco Television Playhouse program that aired on March 24th 1953 has made the rounds for a while. Said to be the first TV script adapted for the big screen. As it was done for live TV, like those plays on the Studio One show, it has it's limitations, but Rod Steiger along with Nancy Marchand's efforts does touch a nerve. Now I'm looking forward to the big screen adaptation a year or two down the line.

Impressive tv-play. The format works well for this chamberpiece, adding intimacy to the portrayal of a poor guy, played very well by Steiger.
