NOT THE FILM but the TV Pilot for the never-realized program: Lynch's Picture Factory joined with Imagine Television in association with Touchstone Television to produce this two-hour ABC pilot. ABC passed on it due to the violence and the pilot was left in limbo until 18 months later Studio Canal Plus agreed to pay ABC $7 million to turn "Mulholland Dr." into a film.

Difficult to objectively assess this anything other than a truncated version of a masterpiece - but on its own terms, this is an interesting and intriguing pilot for the projected series, though the concessions to 90s TV are vaguely apparent (especially the overstated music score). Watts, Harring and Theroux are brilliant here as ever; it's more interesting and instructive what Lynch leaves out (and shifts around) in this teaser version of the finished product.

Would've made for an awesome series and a huge financial flop, which makes it easy to understand why the series never happened.

The tension was already there. Pilot contained the major points of the story later expanded to the movie. I was not much surprised TV denied it. Don't get me wrong: I like the story, but it's not for big masses. It would be interesting to see how the story would go on. The end of extended movie version reminded me Twin Peaks European Version decision.

Was really enjoying it until it jumped the tracks on the last reel and disappeared in to Lynch's crazy brain
