A look at a seemingly placid New England town that is actually wrought with illicit affairs, crime and tragedy, all told through the lens of Olive, whose wicked wit and harsh demeanor mask a warm but troubled heart and staunch moral center. The story spans 25 years and focuses on Olive's relationships with her husband, Henry, the good-hearted and kindly town pharmacist; their son, Christopher, who resents his mother's approach to parenting; and other members of their community. Wow. This was beautiful. The complex but subdued nature of family dynamics explored in Ozu's flicks mixed with the interplay of bleakness and sympathy found in I don't wanna say like Cassavetes because it seems obvious but it fits. Excellent casting and gorgeous cinematography. Sometimes I forget that TV shit can look so nice(not really a TV show I guess?). Points off for the ending tho that was hackneyed as hell.

Each episode is a string of these understated microcosmic moments that just perfectly capture the complex characters and their equally complex relationships. There's so much going on under the surface. Reminded me of Yasujiro Ozu's films in this way. Wow.

Best goddamn serie I ever watched. Francis is the best. The story is real, conversations, real. All of it. The pain, the suffering, the endurance.

Good, but somehow misses the mark. Almost no one involved--not even the wonderful Frances McDormand--gets the buttoned-up New England thing quite right. All the emotions are too raw and close to the surface. Not too surprising, when you consider both the director and screenwriter are Californians. Bill Murray comes closest...John Gallagher, Jr. is always a joy to watch, and Cory Michael Smith is fantastic. All in all, though, well worth watching.

Unbelievably pretentious. Some of the visual metaphors the director chooses to include are so overwrought and filled with self-importance that you can't help cringing (particularly in the last scene - migrating geese? Really?). McDormand is fine in this sort of role, but I'm not convinced that she's a versatile actor. I really wish this had been cut down to a five-minute short about a date between her and Murray.

more literary than cinematic, which makes the moments of directorial flash slightly jarring, but the general tone is perfect and it's a much-needed in-depth look at some of today's realities and where we're headed. Olive may be a grouch but she's a fundamentally giving person, and the moments of crises arise when there's nobody there to receive

I'm glad I saw this one. Frances McDormand is such an incredible actress, I cannot get enough of her performances. The first and last episodes were by far my favorites. Both had that Fargo-vibe, that quirky realness of everyday life. The other two were lacking a bit of direction, of purpose, in depicting the evolution of Olive's character. The acting was brilliant, a special mention to Richard Jenkins and Zoe Kazan. I just wish it was even more "Fargo-esque".

Great acting by McDormand, who should easily win an Emmy for this. Gloomy as shit though...a wrist cutter's wet dream.
