I haven't seen the Gene Hackman originals, but I'm positive they're better than this film. While it isn't hot as a film, Popeye Doyle works great as a pilot for a Slang & Smoke cop show ala Kojak. Unfortunately ten years too late when it came out-- the infantile 80's didn't have much of a grit tolerance --modern audiences fed on The Shield might be a little more receptive. Ed O'Neill is strong in this type of role, and it's too bad none of his procedurals had the success his comedies did.
