"Say less" and "you loved me at my worst" in episode 7 = automatic 10-point deduction, but the anachronisms are a bit too frequent in general. Otherwise shockingly good fun.

I'm on S01E06 after a few weeks' break, and it's pushing all the right buttons. The writing is just straight outta speech bubbles. The framings owe so much to many pages, even if the panels have to go in a different direction. The whole "Noir" thing opens so many possibilities for the Hero, and Cage closes off so much of the teenager. There's much more respect for Humphrey Bogart than Peter Parker here. But still: I did need a break.

I think Nicolas Cage is a great actor, and he was born to play noir roles like this, but he's about 20 years too old. You'd want your lead to be in his 40's, not his 60's. I thought the episodes dragged a bit. Probably could have had a tighter script and gotten the job done as a feature length film. Definitely worth watching in black and white. Improves the experience by adding the appropriate atmosphere.

A fun twist on the classic Spider-Man. The first few episodes introduce a brand-new world and an interesting premise, but the last three failed to execute on the setup. The action was creative and matched the story, but there was clearly a tight budget, as seen in how some of the CGI looked. Outside of a couple of the side villains, the cast was outstanding. One standout was Silvermane. He was truly a menacing mob boss that kept you on your toes at all times.

Well done, but couldn't hold my interest.

I wish they committed more to the Noir aspect. It looks the part, but the writing often makes it feel like a modern day superhero show. Specifically the humor, but lines like “say less” are even worse than The Walking Dead having Negan say “living in your head rent free.” It still has its moments, specifically in the last three episodes. Cage is fun, and I liked Gleeson as the villain. A decent watch with the right expectations.
