"Everybody's Making Pictures," observes Martin Scorsese in this sly sequel to Robert Altman and Garry Trudeau's Emmy Award-winning satirical miniseries, Tanner '88. Sixteen years after Jack Tanner (Michael Murphy) ran for president, his filmmaker daughter Alex (Cynthia Nixon) is making a documentary about her dad's dark horse campaign. At least, that's the plan - until a disastrous screening sends Alex back to the drawing board, and on to the 2004 Democratic National Convention. (jddempst)

Affectionate follow-up is almost too soft and adoring to its main characters and the 2004 political climate; lacking the acerbic edge that might be expected from Altman, and largely absent his usual distinctive sound and visual styles resulting in a surprisingly generic, vintage TV feel (perhaps accommodations had to be made?) Nevertheless, shift of focus to Nixon's indie film-maker was a wise decision -- and Nixon knocks it out of the park, making this fairly trivial series worth watching.

A nasty, brutal affair. The society of the spectacle is a dreamworld of screens showing everything except the truth. Can one even speak of a "politics" in such a world, where people disappear on the way to the store?
