This is such a humane and engaging series. By using the very authentic voice of Gerald Durrell (and he seems to be a wonderful person), the series creates a genuine "feel good" aura to it. The way they used Lawrence Durrell (Not falling into the trap of making the most famous one the center of the story) is also a great filmmaking choice. All side characters are well-rounded, identifiable and the environment of Corfu provides a great background.

Well acted and beautifully filmed, its a bit sugary sweet at times, but if thats a mood you're looking for, it should suit nicely. Similar in tone to All Creatures Great and Small (and sharing an actor).

The characterisations are all brilliantly funny and so well observed. Everyone involved has done a magnificent job. Leslie's unique blend of boyish gun toting overconfidence and ultimate fallibility make him particularly endearing and my personal favourite. I've rewatched this series at least four times already; it is simply better than the real world.
