Just not my cup of tea. Poorly acted throughout. My life matters and so does my precious time.

It started off strong but about halfway through the third episode it sort of fell off the track and kind of just kept circling the idea of troubled youth wanting to find something more. It did very little to keep you engaged and definitely did not try and build upon a solid cast and solid secondary characters. It leaned too heavily into the love story, a singular force in a world and era much larger and the show suffers because of this choice.

Justice Smith (Zeke) and Herizen Guardiola (Mylene) are absolutely wonderful as the stars of this show. From both an acting and performing standpoint. There are so many other actors and actresses to talk about, but those two steal the show. Ed Bianchi's (and occasionally Baz Luhrmann's) direction is another huge high point of the show. They both intertwined the performances of different characters so well to bring this image of the Bronx in the late 70's to life.

Baz Luhrmann has mastered the coming-of-age story. This entire series bleeds with his signature operatic energy, all the more ironic for the fact that its subject couldn't have less to do with the opera. The Get Down's premature cancellation marks a great loss for representation of minorities and mixed-race Americans (like me). This show could've shaken the world, but it didn't receive a fair chance to do so.
