Summary: Paltrow stars as legendary American author and poet Sylvia Plath, opposite Craig as British Poet Laureate Edward (Ted) Hughes. The film explores the source of creative genius, and love in all its passion. (Focus Features)
Ive been fond of the real Sylvia Plath for a long time already and this is very close to what I would imagine while reading the Bell Jar. Actually, it could not have been closer. Gwyneth is so alike the real Sylvia! Totally undestand that if you do not know the actual poet, this might seem shallow and a real bore, but if you get to know her poems and mainly the Bell Jar, this perfectly fits!
Paltrow and Craig make impressive leads, but it doesn't feel like a biopic: there's no sense that you get any understanding of how Plath and Hughes worked. That, plus an often episodic plot, gives the sense of a film that always has the camera pointed at slightly the wrong focus -- worth a watch, but nothing special.
competent, but this portrayal could have been of anyone. only the faintest traces of plath in the imagery, none in the dialouge (except the direct reportage).
