Average Tier

Post by mwgerb »

As far as I can tell, there are only 12 movies in the database that have both over 1000 rankings and are still able to maintain an average at or above 8.5. They are, in increasing order:

Modern Times (8.5)
City Lights (8.51)
Persona (8.53)
Shawshank Redemption (8.53)
12 Angry Men (8.54)
Sunset Boulevard (8.56)
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (8.57)
Once Upon a Time in the West (8.61)
Seven Samurai (8.67)
The Godfather Part II (8.77)
The Godfather Part I (8.79)
Band of Brothers (8.87)

Anyone see movie I missed, or notice anything else interesting about our newest feature?

Similarly, there are sixteen movies with at least a thousand ratings whose average tier is below 2. In descending order:

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer: 1.96
Batman & Robin: 1.95
Street Fighter (1994): 1.94
Inspector Gadget: 1.89
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation: 1.85
Dungeons & Dragons: 1.83
Speed 2: Cruise Control: 1.78
Kangaroo Jack: 1.76
Home Alone 3: 1.74
Spice World: 1.66
Date Movie: 1.62
Battlefield Earth: 1.61
Catwoman: 1.61
Kazaam: 1.54
Meet the Spartans: 1.45
Epic Movie: 1.4

(Incidentally, Plan 9 From Outer Space? 3.31.)

Heh, that film is roughly ten thousand times better than "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li". Incidentally, the latter is at 1.68 from 229 rankings, which I feel is insultingly high.

If the sequel was a 1.68, then the original was at least a 3.3 or something. Or if the original was a 1.94, the sequel is a 1.00

Persona is in my personal top 5, but this is doubly surprising to me because I always imagined it was a more divisive and more obscure film.

Has only 513 rankings. I think OP states 1000+ rankings as a condition. I bet there are tons of movies with 8+ ranking but less than 1000 rankings.

8+ yes, 8.5+ I'm not so sure, unless you get down to films with just a handful of votes.
In fact I could only find 11 more with less than 1000 but over 300 Rankings
Ikiru - 8.75 from 909 Rankings
Fanny and Alexander - 8.56 from 855 Rankings
The Passion of Joan of Arc - 8.59 from 828 Rankings
Sherlock Jr. - 8.54 from 511 Rankings
Scenes From a Marriage - 8.62 from 513 Rankings
The Decalogue - 8.99 from 498 Rankings
Night and Fog - 8.63 from 465 Rankings
High and Low - 8.67 from 469 Rankings
Harakiri - 8.84 from 367 Rankings
Sansho the Bailiff - 8.6 from 314 Rankings
Children of Paradise - 8.64 from 308 Rankings

Two Leone movies, a samurai film, and both Godfather flicks in the Top 10? Sounds good to me.

I'm also 100% behind the general consensus that Epic Movie is a blight on all of creation.

It's always been highly regarded on here, when I first rated it two years ago my review was pretty much the only negative one out of the whole batch. There's a bit of a wider range of scores now.

I mean, I didn't love it as much as anyone else, but I do think Criticker has attracted an audience that's more likely to love Persona.
