A female journalist lives a lonely life in Mexico City. Her lonely routine is punctuated by sex with unknown men, until one of them, who has introduced violence, begins to come back. She doesn't resent this, and together they engage in more and more violent sexual acts. But be not mistaken, this very intense movie is not about sex, but alienation. (Summary by velocipedist)

I liked the formalistic and static shots. They reminded me of the work of Amat Escalante. But even though the point of that seemed to be to bring across the emptiness of the protagonist, it felt empty to me in a bad way. The last 30 minutes were pretty good though, mainly because it got more tense with minimal means.

Top badass moment? Laura's a brave woman. At one point she goes to the local supermarket and buys five (I think it was five anyway) of what appears to be the Mexican equivalent of Pot Noodle. I get embarrassed buying even one, (as nothing screams out "student" or "loser" louder than a basketful of Pot Noodle); yet like everyone else in the world I secretly want to live on them. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

This Mexican woman's solitary apartment-based life reminded me very much of my own, except that I watch a lot more movies than her, and she has a lot more obscenely depraved sexual encounters than I. Credit to the director for keeping it as interesting as he did, until it got all gross and disturbing and kind of boring.

Michael Rowe is obviously a talent to watch as he shows hints of greatness and psychological acumen in this provocative, explicit debut feature. The film, however, ultimately plays it too safe (speaking strictly in terms of dramatic progress of course, as it clearly doesn't play it safe visually).

"Something wicked this way comes in Michael Rowe's Leap Year, a character study of outstanding subtlety and fierce aesthetic exactitude."
