Suddenly appearing in Florence, an evil seductress causes Cesare, the city's ruler, and his son to both fall madly in love with her. The son, killing his father before an order to torture the woman can be carried out, then turns the city's churches into dens of sexual debauchery. Acts of evil and corruption continue unabated until the arrival of Death, who brings with her a horrible plague which she is about to loose upon the city. (imdb)

Plodding retelling of a Poe story as a tedious morality fable. The church in Florence is corrupt, fails its people as a seductress takes them in her sway, then follows the local religious hill hermit tempted into her arms, then follows divine retribution.... There's no complexity, no characters, just the "God is gonna get ya!" mentality and, as mentioned, those big exterior shots. Not ugly to look at overall, but I don't see much point in watching it either.

There are some good sections in the film but I had to watch this three times because I noticed that my attention kept wandering during the less interesting parts.

Women are he root to all evil. Or 'the plague', as this one calls them. This is a 1919 movie which is based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe, and scripted by none other then Fritz Lang! The actual direction was under Otto Rippert's guidance, and he doesn't do a bad job. There are many moments where the lust and grotesque result of 'the plague' creates the torment it so desires. I still wouldn't say the result was as optimal as it could have been as a clearly well-financed moral drama.
