A retired professor has returned to his estate to live with his beautiful young wife, Yelena. The estate originally belonged to his first wife, now deceased; her mother and brother still live there and manage the farm. For many years the brother (Uncle Vanya) has sent the farm's proceeds to the professor, while receiving only a small salary himself. Sonya, the professor's daughter, who is about the same age as his new wife, also lives on the estate. (imdb)

Each character caught in their own prison, each prison part of a world that has ceased to function but has not yet figured out how to give birth to the next one. No doubt a little stage-bound, but there's some subtlety in the presentation, and the ending is very nicely done.

I'm getting less and less from Konchalovsky. His movies about the russian gentry are getting somewhat repetitive. The social commentary about the exploitation of the locals by the professor is very thin and not explored at all, it ends up being a movie about the first-world problems of aristocrats. The beautiful cinematography makes it above average though.
