Grandma's Boy

Balances comedy with some drama reasonably well. The film seemed to miss the mark for me until the tale of his grandfather. After that it was a pretty fun ride.

Early Harold Lloyd hit is not without its charms, but it lacks the comic precision of the later efforts of his creative team like Safety Last and The Freshman, even if it has its fair share of laughs. The film is nonetheless historically significant insofar as it established Lloyd as a major comic talent, so it's definitely recommended to those keen to explore his filmography further. Its great reputation among aficionados of silent comedy is lost on this particular viewer however.

Harold Lloyd's first feature planned as such. It starts slow so that it can gradually veer into action-comedy as it goes along.
