The movie has a partially interesting first act. The second and third acts flounder so horribly that I could sell them at a fish market. The direction, and writing is dryer than Queen Elizabeth II. I've never been able to predict where a movie was going so clearly.

The film simmers low, and takes its time to unfold but once it does, it provides for all the pace you ever needed. The pace is slow but this is executed in such a masterly manner as to create an almost narcotic essence from which you can hardly escape. In a completely unrelated note, the rape scene was awfully disturbing.

This thoughtful, alternative take on the London gangster flick has quite a lot going for it, even if it takes a while to get moving. The cast is strong, the characters are intriguing and the story develops well as it is revealed bit by bit. I would only wish that the pacing were different, with less build-up in the first third and the ending not so rushed. If this were fixed, the sophistication of the directing would have it rival quality films like The Thomas Crown Affair or Eastern Promises.

A slow, boring, and uneventful crime drama.

Slow but packs a whallop when it wants. A decent entry in the revenge category.

Hodges knows how to tell a story that invites the interest of an intelligent audience, which is more than one can say for most directors these days.

Oh dear. If you going to take yourself this seriously, you better have some top notch actors, and the casting in this is dreadful. A deeply unsatisfying ending too.

"Hodges, working from a bleak Trevor Preston script, is fascinated by the aspirations, desires, and base compulsions that propel society's murderous fringe population." - Nick Schager
