This film handles the LGBT subject area quite well. Its a thought provoking watch and it features good performances from the main cast (James Wilby, Rupert Graves and Hugh Grant). Its a good period drama that I'd recommend.

Ben Kingsley, Simon Callow, Billie Whitelaw and Denholm Elliott are all compelling. While some find Wilby imprecise in the title role, I feel he makes proper choices, playing a guy whose most heartfelt thoughts were constantly elsewhere.

(This is my friend's analysis, so I don't want to take credit for it.) The theme of this film is word vs deed. Maurice and Clive's relationship was more about word, while Alec and Maurice was more about action. At the end of the movie, Clive seems like he may regret things that were not done when he was with Maurice. This film presents a question: "Things may not work out and we might regret the things we do, but is it worse than the doubt and regret felt over things left undone?"
