Queen and Country

A coming of age drama, fairly entertaining but although it has a dark underside it lacks impact.

One of the great films of the ‘80s deserves better than this belated, half-baked, BBC Sunday evening sequel. Caleb Landry Jones gives a performance so inept it makes Dick Van Dyke seem as British as Michael Caine.

Beautifully produced. The story takes several interesting romantic & comical turns, but also offers somber insights into the military institution. It follows two conscripts through their basic training & onto their posting with intransigent military superiors & reveals their personal relationships. Engaging & entertaining. Unpredictable. Callum Turner was very good, as was Caleb Landry Jones. The sister (Vanessa Kirby) was gorgeous & Sophie (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) was cute & satisfying.
