As far as student films go, a well made and interesting film to see. The Killers is such a massive divergence from anything Tarkovsky would ever do including his debut. This short is not particularly noteworthy other than seeing the origins of this master filmmaker.

Although it feels a little like 'young men play gangster dress-up', this is actually a pretty well-paced drama, eloquently bringing up a vague, yet troubling matter in a nuanced way. This is WAAAAYYY better than most of the college films I've seen (or made).

Pretty well shot and it's a good short story, though the casting felt a little off to me. Rather good for a student short, though.

Of course its amateur, but not in the way most amateur films are. More like in the "this guy is actually attending a film school" kind of amateur. I can forgive it for not being particularly substantial, all things considered, but that doesn't earn it a good score.

Pretty good student-film attempt at noirish minimalism with a bit of an existential air about it.

Pretty sophisticated amateur exercise, displaying an aptitude for composition and a preoccupation with death and existentialism. A little hard to take those babyfaces seriously as hardened assassins, though.

This short stays very close to the original short story. The acting is not particularly strong, but some of the cinematographic choices, like the not-quite-on-focus making of the sandwich segment, show some ingenuity.

every time you see this in a tarkovsky retrospective it gains one extra level of boredom to it

Archival material... I don't think you should bother unless you're interested in Tarkovsky biographically. Or perhaps in comparing this to Roman Polanski's early shorts (of the same period), which are more interesting.
