A mix of disaster movie, political activism and social commentary and none the worse for this. With a plot that would be unlikely to survive in todays sanitising world, this has an understated grit and honesty despite being very much of its time. Ok so these are the cleanest miners in the world and some crystal accents remain but that doesn't detract from a very watchable and thought provoking film

The Stars Look Down (1940) is a respectable drama about the coal miners environment with the usual 'trapped in a coal mine' disaster implicated. Michael Redgrave & Margaret Lockwood give lively performance in what's far from the most depressing coal mining movie ever put on screen. And it's that which makes this take on the social topic a little more refreshing.

Enthralling, but so very depressing. And not in an 'it hurts so good,' kind of way; just despondence.
