Feels like watching real life. The film's power is in its ability to make even the most mundane occurrences compelling.

Tulpan exhibits many of the qualities that make up my favorite films: arresting cinematography, thoughtful editing, compelling characters, social relevance, and most of all, a commitment to presenting people as actual human beings. Combining documentary and fiction, writer/director Dvortsevoy creates an empathetic portrait of life on the Kazakh steppe. With a complex mixture of social critique, dramatic conflict, and comic release, Tulpan represents the best of contemporary cinema.

A sincerity that can never be found in an American film.

One of those dusty authentic local films you should look out for. Yurts, Kazakh steppes and what feels like one female character for miles to set up as the love interest.

A comedy drama set in Kazakhstan about a former soldier's desires to complete his dreams, this combination of fiction and documentary is one of the best sort of films you could find, one that this deadpan funny and also emotionally rich. It also has one of the best uses of Boney M you could probably find.

"A folk tale disguised as a documentary, Sergei Dvortsevoy's Tulpan appears something like actual reality, half-planned and half-found." - David Phelps
