Cotten is wonderful as a criminal trying to go straight, and this is a story that balances fatalism and the possibility of redemption well enough that you're not sure how it's going to end.

This re-teaming of Cotten and Valli rekindles their "The Third Man" spark, and Byington and Stewart are very good in support, but the plot is not interesting, the script is without flair and the direction is lackluster.

A nice slice of that good melodrama. A doomed lovers exercise run thru Hollywood so there’s not as much room as one might want but Cotten and Valli are so good together

Dismal love-conquers-all melodrama.

If you can stand the cliche masquerading as a plot, the performances are good.

They tread a little too softly for the lingering suspense to truly hit home, but there was a lot, especially involving Joseph Cotten, that was real good, and did make it a intriguing one, even if it was a little flawed.
