Wow. Fantastic film. I can't say I have seen much of Mark Whalberg's stuff (I've seen Four Brothers, Shooter, The Departed) and I've herd people say he's a bad actor, but his performance in Boogie Nights I thought was great.
I liked pretty much everything about it though I did find it a bit on the long side, but that doesn't really detract from it. The cinematography and editing are one of my favorite parts of the movie along with the screenplay.
The performances in general were great and the story was very enjoyable as well.
What's your opinion?
Just finished watching Boogie Nights.

Totally agree. This movie has a lot of my favorite actors, all with great performances. This is what I reviewed: "Everytime I watch it, I add a point. Great movie."

Great flick. Every scene with William H Macy was a scream.

You could say that Mark Wahlberg is the star of the movie but really this is a movie packed with scene-stealing performances from a whole load of stars, and each gets their moment... Alfred Molina in the drug deal scene, Julianne Moore in the bedroom coke-snorting breakdown scene, Heather Graham in her introductory scene and going back to school, Don Cheadle in the stereo shop / bearclaw shootout scenes... the list goes on. I just love the whole ensemble that PT Anderson created. Awesome use of music too (not just the choice of songs, but the way entire scenes are built around them).

Every time I saw William H. Macy I just had to crack a smile. Just looking at his face was hilarious. The third "encounter" with his wife was horribly awesome.

Re: Just finished watching Boogie Nights.
i love PTA and this is one of his best.
I must disagree with OP, i thought Mark Whalberg was an AWFUL actor, and PTA used this fact to make his role "an awful porn actor"
what makes this movie great is PTA's amazing direction and the amazing scenes/scripts he imagines.
one of my favorites is when they're about to steal the coke and the little Asian kid is lighting fire crackers... you can see the tension in the room, so thick you can cut it with a knife.
i <3 PTA!!!

That would make sense for the few times we seem him "acting" within the movie but what about all of the off camera stuff? I thought he was great in it, you really felt the tension between him and everyone else as his ego grew.
I also quite liked him in I Heart Huckabees and The Departed. While The Happening wasn't that great of a movie I thought he occasionally showed his skill, especially in the first scene where he is teaching his class.
